Harbour metropolis, city of bridges and waterways, green metropolis
A popular classic is a harbour cruise on the Elbe. Most of them start at the landing stages. There are differences between the routes: the large ships, such as the paddle steamers, offer more comfort on board, but due to their height they cannot enter the Speicherstadt. Only the flatter barges can pass under the numerous bridges. The journey time also varies between one and three hours. It is therefore advisable to ask the providers on the spot which parts of the harbour will be visited.
The cheapest way to get to know the harbour from the water is to take a trip on one of the harbour ferries. If you have a valid HVV ticket for the underground/train and bus, you can use these. Line 62, which runs from Landungsbrücken to Finkenwerder and back and also stops at the fish auction hall and the museum harbour in Övelgönne, is very popular. While many people get off at these stops, the Bubendey-Ufer stop - the first stop to Finkenwerder - is still an insider tip: in the middle of the harbour area, a piece of almost untouched nature beckons.
Walk around the Inner and Outer Alster
If that's too long for you, simply hop on a boat on the way. The Alster steamers run every hour during the season (April to early October) and call at a total of nine stations, including Jungfernstieg, the Atlantic Hotel and Alsterpark. There are also numerous special round trips, with some ships also travelling along the surrounding canals as well as the Alster. Some of the ships also operate in winter. A trip on the Alster steamer St. Georg, built in 1876, is a special experience. It is the oldest navigable steamboat in Germany and the only Alster steamer that still runs purely on steam.
Of course, everyone can also get active on the water themselves, with several boat hire companies offering rowing, pedal and sailing boats as well as canoes and SUP boards.
Cycling and paddling along the Alster river
Further north, the Alster river becomes greener and greener - an ideal area for paddlers, but also for cyclists and joggers on the Alster hiking trail. A beautiful route leads from the city centre almost without interruption directly along the Alster to Poppenbüttel - from Ohlsdorf in numerous loops and through lots of greenery. From the Poppenbüttel lock, paddlers can take a tour to the north, which leads over twelve kilometres to the lock in Wulksfelde in Schleswig-Holstein.
